Peace After the Noise

I first met Lt. Col. Darrald B. Harsh while he was writing his World War II memoir at the age of 95. I cared for him during the last 6 years of his life. 

In 1944, Darrald bailed out of his B-26 Marauder over Normandy, France. Upon his landing in the French countryside, locals gave him food and shelter. Darrald went into hiding but eventually was captured by the Germans and became a prisoner of war for the remaining 10 months of World War II.

50 years later in 1994, Darrald reconnected with one of his rescuers - a man named Pierre. They wrote letters to each other over the next decade.

Darrald died in February 2018. Through these letters and other remains of his WWII experience, I found a different way to connect with him.

I located Pierre and met him in Bois-Guillaume, France on July 6, 2018- the day he saw Darrald parachute down from the sky 74 years prior. It is my intention to honor Darrald and the power of human connection by sharing their story. This project is currently ongoing.
